Educational Objectives for Communications Conferences

 

Instructional Hours

CFC - 15 and 1/2 hours of instructional time with 2 to 5 hours of pre-requisite homework depending upon which track you rregister for.

Objectives

During ICC Public Speaking Conferences, Middle School and High School Students have opportunities to develop communications skills in three distinct areas: critical thinking, speaking, and connecting with audiences.

1. Students will develop critical thinking skills as they learn to:

 
  • Develop a vision for using communication skills
  • Examine current events
  • Experience at least 3 styles of debate
  • Analyze and interpret literature
  • Bring literature to life to communicate a message
  • Use logic and support to persuade audiences
  • Engage in active listening
  • Participate in team building activities
  • Contribute to discussions on various topics
  • Analyze real world issues
  • Express themselves through three genres of speaking
  • Practice speaking with limited preparation
  • Participate in simulations revolving around real world issues
  • Build consensus

2. Students will develop public speaking skills as they practice ways to:

  • Command the public platform
  • Defend ideas when challenged
  • Use vocal and physical expression to get a point across
  • Speak on the spot
  • Delight audiences
  • Consider connecting with listeners from other cultures
  • Address controversial topics with grace
  • Participate in a group presentation
  • Respond to questions and speak confidently about the Christian faith
  • Speak informatively on a subject
  • Practice organizational skills

3. Students will learn to connect with an audience as they:

  • Overcome self-consciousness
  • Analyze an audience
  • Improve interview skills for jobs and college applications
  • Become a successful student leader
  • Network with other students with similar goals
  • Explore connecting with audience members from differing cultures
  • Learn how to find and create community platforms
  • Discover ways to impact the community
  • Study what it means to become a cultural communicator
  • Gain tools for communicating in a wide variety of communication situations ranging from interpersonal to large group settings 

Students will further develop Critical Thinking skills and practice them through activities such as debate.

4. Chapter members will have opportunity to serve in various leadership roles, present YSG speeches and Chapter Snapshot, based upon time and availability.
