Touring Intern Program Description
The Intern Programs within the Institute for Cultural Communicators were designed to accomplish several objectives:
1) to provide advanced leadership training for young leaders;
2) to provide peer mentoring for conference participants 6 to 18 years of age;
3) to offer helps and encouragement to their parents, teachers, and coaches.
We ask interns to be prepared to adhere to standards of conduct and behavior while representing ICC. Often these standards are more rigid than those we are free to enjoy within our own families. Many, though not all, of these standards are listed here. Due to the ever-changing nature of what we do, it is often necessary to adapt or modify these as we move through a conference tour.
Objectives of the Internship include: providing Interns with ongoing instruction and directed study in a variety of skills including rhetoric, leadership, teaching, curriculum development, group dynamics, conflict resolution, project and people management, leadership skills, organizational systems, and administration to name a few. Duties of the Intern include: teaching, planning all conference activities, adapting curriculum and programs to event demographics, camp counselor, facility management, scheduling of all activities, interacting with church and community leaders, driving, packing, cooking, representing the Institute at various events. For more insight into the responsibilities of ICC Interns see the Roles and Responsibilities list. Applicants to the Intern Program should be ready for and desire to grow in these and other communication and leadership skills.
You will notice that the Intern Application is not a simple fill in the blank or circle the numbers form. We wish to know a great deal about our Interns. We spend a lot of time together. Each year we pray that God will direct us to the right team as He is directing those individuals to us. Please prayerfully consider how God is directing you as you prepare your application.
Note that applying for an ICC Internship is a 4-tier process.
Tier 1 is to complete the application and Liability Waiver/Medical Release Form
Tier 2 is the Prospective Intern Assessment (described below).
Tiers 3 and 4 include assignments and questionnaires to evaluate the prospective intern's skills, character, and maturity. Each Tier provides additional opportunity for both prospective Interns and the Selection Committee to discern whether an ICC Internship is a fit. Applicants advancing to the next Tier will be notified by email. Applicants not advancing will also be notified by email.
The selection process should be finalized and all 2012 applicants notified by March 15, 2012.
To aid you in deciding whether applying to the ICC Intern Program is for you, the following expectations are listed.

Don't Bring
Music or movies that would be inappropriate for the whole family or church; schoolwork (there's no time); more luggage (larger or heavier) than you can carry by yourself.
Packing
Travel space is extremely limited in the motor home. Each intern is asked to pack in 3 soft bags- -a garment bag, a duffel bag and a backpack or book bag. Soft luggage is easier to store. Each intern must be able to handle and transport all of his/her own luggage. Even if you are a heavy lifter, you are limited to 50 pounds per bag. Dimensions need to meet current airline regulations.
Conference Attire
Conferences are professional training events within a professional educational setting. For that reason interns need to be dressed in professional attire.
Gentlemen: A shirt and tie is required. You are not required to wear a coat all day every conference day but you are required to have one with you each conference day.
Ladies: Dresses, skirts and suits are appropriate. Close-toed shoes and hosiery are not always required but you are required to bring them! Pants must be worn as suits with coordinating jackets. Casual pants, blouses or sweater tops are not acceptable substitutes. Ladies are encouraged to practice sitting in any skirt in which they wish to teach. Would it be comfortable to sit out in the open on a stage with an audience at knee level? If not, don't bring it. Longer skirts and dresses tend to be more modest for sitting in a group. As for tops- -try it on and practice making every possible gesture, including holding signs over your head. If it rises above the waist of your skirt or pants, don't bring it. If in doubt, err on the side of modesty. Additional information will be given to each intern team about standards in dress.
Coordinating Attire: Blouses, skirts, scarves, neckties in theme print make for a coordinated looking team and add a little fun to the professional garb. 2012 Interns will coordinate conference attire. When planning your wardrobe, you will need the following coordinated outfits:
-
Black and red (primary color red)
-
Black and pink (cotton candy pink)
-
Black/gray and purple (it is recommended that guys and gals have both a black suit and a gray suit)
-
Each team decides on one “fun” day theme, such as paisley, plaid, or another color.
-
All black - teams have several opportunities for add-on performances. For these and the Evening Program, head-to-toe black is often the wardrobe.
Additional coordinated clothing includes:
-
Khaki slacks or skirts (ladies have the option)
-
Black shirt with black dress slacks
-
White shirt with black dress slacks
-
Blue jeans (dark blue) with no holes or patches
ICC/CFC shirts are to be worn for set up and take down or anytime we are on location and not in conference attire. Interns receive shirts at the beginning of tour and are responsible to see that they are clean and ready to wear when needed. Lost, torn, stained, or otherwise mangled shirts will be replaced at the intern's expense.
Friday night program attire: is black and white. For gentlemen this could be a tux or a black suit and tie combination. For ladies this should be a formal, floor length, modest dress (shoulders must be covered). All sleeveless gowns must have straps, even with a shawl or jacket. Hemlines must clear the floor by at least one inch with the shoes that will be worn. It is important that the shoes can be worn up and down stairs, across platforms, on any type of flooring. Gowns should be black and may have white jackets or accents.
Travel and Recreational Attire: Comfort and modesty are in order. Long shorts and jeans are appropriate (no button fly pants). Tank tops, short shorts, short skirts or shirts that show your belly button are not acceptable. Modest one-piece swimsuits or tankinis that fully meet are permitted for water activities. Slip on shoes or flip-flops are a necessity for hopping in and out of the motor home on travel days. Travel clothing should be comfortable and modest. Interns are never to be in public areas in pajamas or other sleep attire. Undergarments are not to show (for guys or girls).
Intern Program Expenses
You may have spoken with former Interns concerning their financial arrangements for the Conference Tour. We are always looking for ways to improve our program and best serve the interests of individual Interns and their families and the ongoing ministry of Institute for Cultural Communicators. Please do not hesitate to discuss any questions you may have about the Intern program with Lisa Kays.
Meals, Lodging and Travel: ICC provides for all living and traveling expenses during the tour. This includes meals, lodging, and travel between conferences. ICC also provides t-shirts to be worn during conference set up and take down, as well as all materials necessary to carry out the responsibilities of the position.
Transportation: Interns are expected to provide for their own transportation to and from beginning and ending points on the tour. The tour will begin and at the ICC Training Center in Mufreesboro, TN; however the final stop varies from year to year. Parents of our Interns often choose to visit one of the conferences along the tour to see their students in action. Parents are asked to please contact Mrs. Moon about plans for visiting a conference. Interns are responsible for their transportation to and from the following events (see dates above):
-
2012 IGNITE, TN
-
2012 National Convention
-
Tour, beginning and ending in TN
-
2013 IGNITE (arriving in TN, departure TBA)
Touring fee: While traveling the country, it is nice to see some of the countryside, landmarks, and just plain fun places to stop. We have learned that it works best to plan these activities for the group in order to make the most of our limited time in a given area. These fees work out to be approximately $1800.00 for the full tour. The touring fee includes a number of activities and opportunities such as sight-seeing and touring, area attractions, special events, additional accommodations for sight-seeing purposes, more expensive meals to accommodate special opportunities, etc. It does not include personal shopping, and meals other than those provided for the team. The final fee is determined once the tour and touring team are confirmed and is payable at the beginning of the tour.
Extra Spending Money
There are many occasions for spending money on gifts and souvenirs as well as extra snacks and just plain fun. If interns don't care for the meals offered, they are welcome to purchase food and snacks with their own spending money. Additional monies are for the "extras," to be used at each one's discretion and should not be essential. Interns are also responsible for their own dry cleaning, hair care (including cuts and appropriate styling), and medical care costs. If you have special food requirements (or tastes) you will be responsible for your additional food.
Overseas Trips and Other Special Events
ICC is regularly invited to "special events" or overseas destinations. For these events, current and former interns are invited to participate at the cost of their own travel expenses. Example: If ICC is invited to Hawaii, team members pay their own airfare and remaining expenses are covered for the length of the conference. Sometimes additional days are added for sightseeing. Generally, food and housing are covered and team members pay only their own sightseeing fees.
